NEW! Join us via LinkedInIn 1985, a delegation of civic, business and cultural leaders led by Baltimore Mayor, William Donald Schaefer, traveled to Xiamen, China to establish a Sister City relationship. In June 1986, Xiamen Mayor Zou Erjun reciprocated with a visit to Baltimore.

Since then both cities have enjoyed a vibrant relationship with many visits and successful projects. As China’s economic and political importance continues to grow, this relationship has become a key part of Baltimore’s international strategy.
The Baltimore-Xiamen relationship is managed by a committee of private-sector volunteers appointed by Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. Xiamen is one of 11 Sister Cities relationships which are guided by the the Mayor's Office of International and Immigrant Affairs.
All Sister Cities are established under the Sister Cities International Program .

1985年秋, 美国马里兰州巴尔的摩市市长率领一行21人的代表团 （包括行政，经贸，教育， 文化， 等等）访问中国厦门, 并与厦门正式结成了姐妹城市。1986年夏，厦门市市长回访巴尔的摩市，两城市从此开始了积极频繁的互访与项目合作。随着近年来中国在国际上的政治经济影响力日益增强, 两市之间的姐妹城市关系也成为了巴尔的摩市国际战略的重要组成部分。
巴尔的摩市长办公室国际事务处和市长外事顾问委员会联合管理巴尔的摩–厦门姐妹城委员会。 和巴尔的摩市的其它11个姐妹城市一样，巴尔的摩–厦门姐妹城的组织运作由民间企业自发组成。
巴尔的摩与厦门是由国际姐妹城市组织正式认可的姐妹城市。1956年，当其时的美国总统艾森豪威尔召开白宫政府首脑会议正式提出民间对民间的国际间交流计划，从而提高从草根开始的全球合作。来自132个国家的超过2500个组织参与了这个计划，通过在操作性强的可持续性发展，青年教育，文化艺术，人道主义关怀，和经济发展等课题方面的合作，该计划已经促进了人类和平。
